Why is it like this in Missouri?

Missouri's electricity rate of about 13¢/kWh is among the lower in the Midwest, but that advantage is narrowing. Ameren Missouri pushed through a roughly 12% rate increase in June 2025, adding about $14/month to average bills. With gasoline priced similarly to electricity on a per-mile basis for a typical PHEV, At the January 2026 baseline, electricity is clearly the cheaper per-mile option in Missouri — though the rate trend is moving in the wrong direction for home charging, and further increases are expected.
