Why is it like this in Maryland?

Maryland's residential electricity rate of about 22.4¢/kWh has risen sharply, driven primarily by PJM capacity auction prices clearing at record levels. BGE customers saw roughly $16/month added to electricity supply costs in June 2025. The Maryland PSC denied about half of BGE's reconciliation increase request, but additional increases are locked in through 2027 and PJM's 2025 capacity auction again cleared at the maximum allowable price. Despite the sharp PJM-driven rate increases, electricity is still the cheaper per-mile option for Maryland PHEV drivers at the January 2026 baseline — though continued capacity price increases locked in through 2027 are steadily eroding that margin.
