Why is it like this in New Jersey?

New Jersey electricity bills surged roughly 20% on June 1, 2025, as PJM capacity auction prices flowed through to residential supply rates — PSE&G customers saw about $23/month added and JCP&L customers about $27/month. Governor Sherrill issued a directive to freeze future rate increases and issue bill credits, but the structural cause — the PJM capacity market — remains. At the January 2026 baseline, electricity is modestly cheaper per mile for New Jersey PHEV drivers — though the PJM-driven bill increases are structurally persistent, and further rate increases could shift the balance toward gasoline.
